Sound Terminology

Non-Diegetic


Title Music: The theme tune of the programme usually at the start of the program.
Incidental Music: Orchestral music used to create suspense and atmosphere. Usually used in horror films or programs.
Sound Motifs: Sound, when played, reminds the audience of a certain character.
Sound Effects: Effects used to enhance the sound of a certain scene.
Voice Over: Used to give the viewer an insight to the character speaking.

Diegetic


Synchronous Sound: Sounds that match what you are seeing.
Sound Effects: Effects used to enhance the sound of a certain scene.
Dialogue: Characters speaking on screen.
Ambient Sound: Natural sound you would hear in any certain scene.

Mise-En-Scene is the arrangement of props, costume, scenery and characters.
